DNR Recommends Scaling Back Hunting Bill

-The state Department of Natural Resources is recommending that a hunting bill be scaled back, after lawmakers and state agencies were inundated with nearly 2,000 angry emails and letters.

A report says the Sporting Heritage Bill would open nearly all Wisconsin parks and trails to hunting. The DNR on Friday suggested keeping about one-third of state parks and trails closed for hunting.

The newspaper obtained the more than 2,500 emails and letters sent to lawmakers, the DNR and the Natural Resources Board. Many were opposed to aspects of the law.

Some worried that campers, hikers and pets would get hurt. Others said they would never use parks where hunting was being allowed.

The Natural Resources Board is scheduled to review the DNR's proposal Tuesday in Madison.
