MOSINEE WILL REMAIN 'THE INDIANS'

A Cloverbelt Conference school will not change their nickname – yet. For about 70 years, Mosinee sports teams have been referred to as “The Indians”, but the name has come under fire from the State Department of Public Instruction and some Native American groups.

The school board last night heard from both sides of the debate during a two-hour open forum.

Opponents said the nickname perpetuates stereotypes and an ethnicity should not be a nickname.

Those opposed to changing it said they viewed the nickname as a way of honoring American Indians while maintaining a long tradition.

Despite the vote against changing the nickname, several of those in attendance – including school board members – said they anticipated the state of federal government would eventually step in and force a name change.
