DOYLE CONCEALED CARRY VETO STANDS
Tuesday, January 31st, 2006 -- 3:48 pm Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
The state Assembly Tuesday fell two votes short of overriding the governor's veto of “concealed carry" legislation. Assembly backers of the bill needed 66 votes in the assembly – they only got 64. Six Democrats voted to pass the bill late last year, but two of them - Reps. John Steinbrink of Pleasant Prairie and Terry Van Akkeren of Sheboygan - flipped and voted to sustain the veto. Rep. Scott Gunderson, R-Waterford, the bill's main sponsor in the Assembly, said Steinbrink and Van Akkeren bowed to pressure from Doyle rather than vote their principles. But Steinbrink issued a statement saying he couldn't vote to override the veto because Sen. Dave Zien, R-Eau Claire, the bill's main sponsor in the Senate, has said he wanted to tweak the measure once it became law to make it less restrictive.
