National Stop on Red Week
Sunday, August 5th, 2012 -- 6:57 am Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
To discourage red-light-running and other dangerous driving behaviors, the Federal Highway Administration has declared this coming week as National Stop on Red Week.
It’s one of the most basic driving lessons people learn: a red traffic signal means stop. Unfortunately, too many people still aren’t getting the message. Last year in Wisconsin, there were nearly 32,000 traffic convictions for failure to obey a traffic sign or signal.
Drivers who try to "beat the light" put numerous lives at risk. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that over half those killed in red-light running crashes are people other than the signal violator — other motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
