Milk Production Is Up

The USDA announced that total milk production for the 23 major dairy states rose by another 2.1 percent last month compared to 2011 at 16.4 billion pounds.
Wisconsin produced 2.33 billion pounds of milk in May--up 2.4 percent above last year. California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.74 billion pounds.
The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.52 million head, 77,000 head more than May 2011, but 3,000 head less than April 2012. Wisconsin was milking about 1.27 million head of dairy cattle during the month
