Granton First Responders Move Forward After Defibrillator Disappointment

The Granton First Responders are making strides to replace some faulty defibrillators.

Back in November, we told you that Access Cardio Systems Inc. had recalled thousands of the potentially life-saving devices that they said could malfunction. They also closed their doors offering no support to people that had purchased them. The Granton First Responders were one of those groups.

Danielle Boushon of the First Responders said they had 8 of the $1,600 devices – thankfully, only 3 of them had the affected serial numbers.

When news of the recall hit, Boushon says it was very frustrating because of all the fundraising and work the group – and the entire community – had put into purchasing the devices, but things are looking up.

"We have been very fortunate. We have five of the LifePack 500 defibrillators that we've been able to purchase since November," Boushon said, explaining five of the AccessCardio Systems devices remain in service.

They also replaced a defibrillator located in the Granton School.

All tolled, there are 10 defibrillators in service in the Granton Area; many are strategically placed with responders in the community.

They will be training with their new defibrillators next Monday. An automatic defibrillator basically gives the heart a jumpstart after it stops beating and has been known to save lives.
