Wisconsin Second Largest Ethanol Producer

-Wisconsin has become the second-largest exporter of ethanol in the nation.

During a stop at Ace Ethanol in Stanley on Wednesday, State Agriculture Secretary Ben Brancel announced that only Texas produced more ethanol. Wisconsin shipped $75 million worth of ethanol in the past year.

Josh Morby with the Wisconsin Bio-Industry Alliance says the Badger State's ethanol sector now pumps more than a billion dollars into the local economy and he praised Governor Scott Walker for his support.

"It's encouraging to see the support of Governor Walker for the corn ethanol industry, especially at a time when the industry is playing such an important role in helping to keep gas prices down at the pump by providing a cleaner-burning alternative to foreign oil," Morby said. "He understands the importance of adding value to Wisconsin corn, creating jobs and providing a choice for consumers at the pump."

As of March 2012, the country's 209 operating refineries have been producing approximately $13.9 billion gallons of ethanol. Wisconsin has nine large-scale plants with the capacity to produce more than 500 million gallons per year.
