-Two Stanley Prison Officers were recognized on May 22 for heroic acts which helped save the lives of two inmates during separate incidents.

On July 9, 2011, correctional officer Andrew Kjelstad responded to an incident where an inmate was in his cell coughing and choking. Officer Kjelstad delivered three blows to the inmate’s back in an effort to dislodge the obstruction and, when that failed, he began preforming the Heimlich maneuver. The item was dislodged and the inmate began to breathe normally again.

In another incident on Oct. 3, 2011, Sgt. Robert Chause, Jr., responded to an inmate apparently having a seizure. Sgt. Chause responded to the inmate and discovered he stopped breathing. Another staff member used an AED on the inmate. Sgt. Chause began performing CPR and checking the man’s vitals. The inmate was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Both Kjelstad and Chause received certificates and were recognized by the Department of Corrections for their heroism.
