GRANTON SCHOOL BOARD LOOKS FOR NEW SUPERINTENDENT

The Granton School Board will be looking for a new superintendent. At a special school board meeting Thursday night, the school board accepted the resignation of interim superintendent Jerry Nelson.

The news was not a surprise to the board as Nelson has already stayed on longer than he intended when he was hired in 2001.

The board will advertise the position as a “60-percent” position, meaning the new administrator will work three days a week. No one within the school is interested in the position, and the job will be posted through school administrative organizations, Nelson says.

Nelson was hired on an interim basis in 2001 after the board fired Don Danielson. The firing caused a controversy in the district and a wrongful firing lawsuit filed by Danielson was settled out of court in November of 2004. Danielson was awarded $20,000 -- far less than the $1.5-million he originally sought.

Nelson also guided the district through a process in 2004 that saw a $350,000 revenue cap exemption referendum pass on a vote of 328 in favor and 298 opposed. Nelson’s resignation will be effective June 30th.
