FATHER OF OFFICER-RELATED SHOOTING SPEAKS

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The father of the Hatfield-area man who was shot and killed by officers last week is speaking out.

According to this week’s Clark County Press, David Jacoby of Wisconsin Rapids, calls the final hour of his son’s life “totally baffling” and “completely out of character” and credits the Clark County Sheriff’s Department for being professional and compassionate in their handling of the matter.

Jacoby had graduated from the University of Wisconsin Platteville with an engineering degree and had no criminal record. His father acknowledged his son may have had some problems, but said he preferred not elaborate until after an investigation into the shooting is complete.

Authorities say Jacoby became agitated when a passerby stopped and asked if he needed help last Tuesday. The driver noticed Jacoby, who was walking down the middle of Riviera Avenue, had a pistol beneath his jacket and called 9-1-1.

When deputies arrived, they say he brandished the weapon and shot “in their vicinity” as he fled into a wooded area. The final stanza played out after Jacoby tried to gain entry to at least one residence near Lake Arbutus. Officers believed he was preparing to take an officer’s life so they resorted to deadly force. Both Jackson and Clark County officers responded to the scene and it remains unclear who fired the fatal shot.
