A fundraising project sponsored by the Neillsville Historic Preservation Commission and the Neillsville Chamber of Commerce is underway.

With a contribution of $500, Tuft’s Museum is kicking off a new community project to raise money for signage to mark Neillsville’s National Register Historic Downtown District. The money being donated by Tufts Museum comes from the 2010 Neillsville Christmas Tour of Homes.

The National Register District is a tremendous assest to Neillsville and part of the mission of the Neillsville Historic Preservation Commission is to make the community aware of these resources. In addition to the Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in June, 2000, Neillsville has 11 individual structures listed in the Register with the 1964 Wisconsin World’s Fair Pavilion pending listing.

The large bronze plaques that are set on posts can range in price from $1200 to $5600 each. The Presveration Commission is looking at one unit on the north end of the Historic District and one on the south end. They are encouraging other Neillsville non-profit organizations and private individuals to contribute. Donations can be made through the Neillsville Chamber of Commerce.
