Unemployment rates either dropped or held their own in nine of Wisconsin's 12 metro areas in December. That is according to a report released Wednesday by the state Department of Workforce Development.

Unemployment rates increased in 44 of the state's 72 counties. Door County had the highest county unemployment rate at 11.7 percent while Dane county had the lowest at 4.4 percent. Clark County’s unemployment rate went from 6.7 percent in November to 7.2 percent in December which ranked them 33rd in the state. Jackson County came in 28th at 7.7 percent, and Wood County 43rd at 6.6 percent - both counties saw an increase in the their unemployment rate over November 2011. Marathon county remained unchanged at 6.5 percent.

Of the state's 31 largest cities, the report says unemployment rates either dropped or remained unchanged in 28 of them. Racine had the highest unemployment rate of any city at 11.2 percent. In the larger metro areas, only Appleton, Eau Claire and La Crosse had increases in unemployment rates.
