ST. POINT MINIMUM WAGE HIKE?
Thursday, January 13th, 2005 -- 10:39 am Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
Stevens Point could join the relatively small list of Wisconsin city’s to set their own minimum wage this summer. Mayor Gary Wescott announced Wednesday that he'll ask the Common Council to implement the recommendations of a bipartisan minimum wage task force if the Republican-controlled Legislature doesn't raise the wage by June. The task force has recommended an increase from the current rate of $5.15 an hour to $5.70 an hour by October and $6.50 an hour by July 2006. The minimum wage hasn’t changed in eight years. Madison is the only Wisconsin city that's had a minimum wage increase actually take effect, but several cities - including Milwaukee and La Crosse - have introduced similar proposals.
