Report: Open Enrollment More Popular Than Ever

More Wisconsin public school students are swapping districts.
An analysis by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance shows 34,498 students used the state’s open enrollment program to attend a school outside their home district during the 2010-11 school year; that’s an increase of 8.1% from the previous year and five times higher than in 2001.
And while more students are open enrolling, there are fewer students in public schools, overall.
There were 857,856 full-time equivalent students in 2011, down 1,200 from 2010 and the fewest in 15 years.
Locally, Marshfield was the big winner in open enrollment last year. 203 students open enrolled into the district, while only 134 left. A net gain of 69 students.
Neillsville saw 31 come into the district and 26 leave, a net gain of five. Loyal had 19 come in and 36 leave, a net loss of 17 students. Greenwood had 8 come into the district and 30 leave, a net loss of 22. Granton had 32 open enroll in, while 48 left, a net loss of 16.
The report also looks at the comparative per pupil expenditures, which in our area range from a high $11,722 per student in Granton to around $9,800 in Marshfield and Neillsville.
