CONCEALED CARRY RULES STILL BEING WRITTEN

A law allowing people to carry concealed weapons in Wisconsin will take effect in two months, but it’s still unclear what type of training will be required.

The Department of Justice is waiting for the Governor’s office to weigh in before writing the administrative rules.

"We send a scope statement over to the Governor so he has an opportunity to review it and make sure it's within the perimeters of legislative intent," explains David Zibolski, a Deputy Administrator at the Wisconsin Department of Justice in the Division of Law Enforcement Services. "Then he sends back either an approval or denial, or there could be redactions to what the proposed rules may be."

"We really have to wait for the Governor before we can move ahead," he notes.

Zibolski believes the rules will be finalized by mid-October.

A few types of training have already been approved; for instance, hunters’ safety, even if you received your certificate decades ago.

"There is no time restraint on the hunter's safety course, as long as you took it," he explains.

The DNR has records of people that took the course dating back to the early 1970s. "I know you can do that for a couple dollars. Get a copy of your hunter's safety certificate and use that as proof of training," Zibolski says.

November 1 is the first day state residents can apply to receive a concealed carry permit.
