CORN LOOKING GOOD

It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.

After a slow start to the planting season, area farmers have a good-looking corn crop on their hands.

"After a late planting and emergence that was a little later than average...we're pretty much on schedule," says Richard Halopka of Clark County UW-Extension.

Last week’s heat wave and plenty of rain helped the crop play catch-up.

And—knock on wood—the forecast is looking excellent.

"We're coming into pollination now. That's very important, not to have stressed plants, to get good pollination," he explains. "We're anticipating some moisture again this week. Conditions are setting up where it could be a very good crop out there."

And while the corn crop is looking excellent in central Wisconsin, other areas of the country haven’t been as lucky. That could push corn prices higher.

"The prices appear like they're going to be fairly strong. It could be very beneficial for this area, economically," he concludes.

Halopka says soybeans and other crops are also looking good this summer.
