A plea deal is in the works for a former Neillsville church treasurer accused of stealing thousands of dollars from his congregation.

Authorities say John Roenz Of Neillsville took around $140,000 while serving as treasurer of Calvary Lutheran Church in Neillsville.

He was in Clark County Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon for a scheduling conference.

District Attorney Darwin Zwieg said, after preliminary discussions with Roenz’s attorney Kevin Musolf, he believes the two sides will be able to reach a plea agreement. He said they needed to “hammer out the details.”

Visiting Judge Frederic Fleishauer scheduled a plea hearing for June 29th.

If convicted of Theft by Bailee, Roenz could spend a maximum of 10 years in prison and pay a $25,000 fine.
