Summer weather returned right on cue yesterday as communities large and small took time out of their long weekend to say “thank you” to veterans—especially those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

One such ceremony was held in Greenwood, where members of the Greenwood American Legion marched down main street followed by the High School band.

Dozens of area residents joined the procession as it traveled to the High School for a ceremony.

"Oh God, in your Mercy, make it possible for our brothers and sisters who are not with us anymore to rest in the Celestial Peace," prayed Father Joe Follmar. "May the memories of their lives stay with us. May they be a continuous blessing and an undying heritage."

The keynote address was delivered by the American Legion’s 7th District Commander, Randy Lenser. he noted more than 1-million American servicemen and women had fallen in combat since the Revolutionary War.

"Many of them died protecting one another, but they served so we could keep the things we loved the most: God, country and family," Lenser said. "By remaining true to these principles, we honor their sacrifice."

Other ceremonies were planned for Loyal and Neillsville and at The Highground Veterans Memorial.
