ETHANOL CAUSING SOME STRANGE 'BLENDS' IN MADISON
Tuesday, October 4th, 2005 -- 2:29 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

An unlikely group of supporters and critics are taking sides on a bill that would require all regular unleaded gasoline contain 10%-ethanol.

Supporting the measure: a bi-partisan group of state lawmakers such as Republican state Representative Scott Suder and Democratic Governor Jim Doyle. Opposed: big oil companies, the DNR, some environmental groups and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce.

Appearing on Viewpoint Tuesday morning, Suder explained his support for the measure.

"I believe ethanol can legitimately be called a 'freedom fuel'," Suder raves. "It has boosted corn prices, it helps reduce our dependence on foreign oil."

"It was done in Minnesota, in fact, they're going to a 20%-blend in some cases. We're competing with Minnesota," Suder says.

And the Abbotsford assemblyman said there were some interesting partnerships forming against the measure.

"You have WMC and small and large business interests throughout the state fighting something that's good for farmers and good for consumers," Suder says.

"It's a very interesting coalition."

Suder believes the bill will gain the needed bi-partisan support to pass both houses of the legislature.
