SPRING MELT IS UPON US
Friday, March 18th, 2011 -- 12:20 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The spring melt is definitely upon us.

If you drive around the countryside today, you’ll see streams and tributaries are on the rise—in many cases overflowing their banks—as a significant snow pack continues to melt away.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, the Black River in Neillsville isn’t expected to reach flood stage this spring, but it will be raging. The river jumped nearly 3-feet from Thursday at 9 a.m. to this morning at 9 a.m. It’s now at 8.66-feet. Flood stage is 18-feet. Of course, we reached flood stage last September, when the river crested at 18.78-feet.

Downstream, the Black River is expected to reach “action stage,” but not flood stage. The river is expected to reach nearly 46-feet by Wednesday morning at Black River Falls. That’s one foot below flood stage.

The only flood watch currently in effect in Wisconsin is for the Baraboo River near Baraboo.
