A former state senator is recovering and remains optimistic after losing his leg in a motorcycle crash in Florida.

According to an interview with the Chippewa Herald, Dave Zien’s left leg was amputated above the knee after a horrific motorcycle crash early Sunday morning.

The paper reports The 61-year-old former state senator and state representative is still listed in serious condition at Tallahassee hospital, where he is joined by his former wife, two daughters and son.

He may have to stay in the hospital for three months and relearn how to walk with a prosthetic leg, but he knows he got lucky, saying “there was no way a human being should have survived the crash.”
