A former Neillsville church treasurer accused of stealing thousands of dollars from his congregation was in court Wednesday.

John Roenz Of Neillsville is accused of stealing nearly $140,000 while serving as treasurer of Calvary Lutheran Church in Neillsville.

He was supposed to be in court for an arraignment hearing last week, but he didn’t show up after his attorney apparently thought the hearing had been canceled. Clark County Circuit Court Judge Jon Counsell issued a bench warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody later that day, but was released from jail after a brief court appearance.

On Wednesday, Roenz pleaded not guilty to the charges. He has filed a request for a substitute judge. The case will now move toward a possible jury trial.
