Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal train accident that happened near Fairchild Saturday afternoon. 26-year-old Corey Kaufman of Fairchild died after he was struck by a Union Pacific train with three locomotives and 40 cars. The engineer of the train saw Kaufman lying on the railroad tracks, but he couldn’t stop the train fast enough. Earlier in the day, the victim was involved in short high-speed chase in the area. Kaufman, who was driving without a valid license and was wanted on a warrant, allegedly fled his vehicle on foot into a wooded area. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate.
