WOOD STOVE CAUSES FIRE

A wood stove appears to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a garage and severely damaged a home in Jackson County early Friday morning. Black River Falls and City Point Fire Department were called to the residence in the town of Pray at around 4:30 a.m. The garage was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene. Crews were at the scene for more than four hours in bitter cold temperatures. Rick Spittel was the only person home at the time of the fire and he called 911 after finding his home full of smoke. No one was injured in the fire, and the owner is being helped by the American Red Cross. Black River Falls Fire Chief Steve Schreiber says it appears the fire spread from the wood stove in the garage to the home through a heating duct. He says the home has major smoke and heat damage. Damage is estimated at $95,000.
