QUESTIONS LINGER ABOUT PUBLIC EDUCATION

The future for the state’s public schools is up in the air as the new legislature and Governor begin setting policy in Madison. Upcoming decisions will have a huge impact on the delivery of public education, and local property tax bills.
The word coming from Madison is schools should brace for a cut in state aid and a proportional cut to their revenue limits as Republicans try to save the state money, but prevent property taxes from shooting up. But, that scenario would force districts to operate with less revenue.
Some Republican leaders say they’ll attempt to make it easier for districts to win some negotiation battles with teachers, especially in the area of health insurance benefits.
State Sen. Glenn Grothman wants to do away with state funding for 4-Year Old Kindergarten. Others want to remove the cap on the virtual school enrollment, which could have a negative impact on “brick-and-mortar schools’” enrollments.
