WILL CLARK CO. BOARD SIZE SHRINK?

Jackson County will consider reducing the size of their County Board of Supervisors next week. Could Clark County follow suit?

Board Chairman Wayne Hendrickson says the board has operated with 29 supervisors since 1980. Before that, they had 27.

Hendrickson plans to survey the board to see if they’d like to cut the number of supervisors.

"We did that 10 years ago. 10 years ago, five of them came back that they would like to cut it and the rest said leave it the same," he says. "We'll find out what they say now. There are a few different ones on the board right now."

The board seems to be concerned that a reduction in board size could reduce some areas’ representation.

"I think that's the biggest concern. You're not going to save a lot of money. The only time you'd save money is when the full board meets, because you wouldn't be paying so many people," Hendrickson notes.

Hendrickson personally believes the board could function effectively with around 25 supervisors.

County’s must redistrict after receiving information from the 2010 census. They should get that information in February.
