LOYAL SCHOOL BOARD BUSY

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The Loyal School Board tentatively approved some massive budget cuts last night, authorized another referendum and accepted the resignation/retirement of their superintendent.

The district has tried twice, but has been unable to pass a revenue cap exemption referendum. Before the last vote in November, the school board released proposed cuts they said would eventually be needed to balance their budget if the referendum failed.

Superintendent Graeme Williams says the school board took the first steps toward making those cuts last night, approving the elimination of 2.5 full-time teaching positions and 1.3 full-time support staff positions. Also on the chopping block are the school’s transportation of 4K students, field trips, the school yearbook, track and wrestling and the school’s gifted and talented program. The proposed cuts would save the district an estimated $383,000 next year. The board has not yet specified which positions will be eliminated.

The board approved sending another referendum to voters in April, but didn’t decide on an amount or duration of the cap exemption.

The board also accepted the resignation of superintendent Graeme Williams.

Williams will retire effective June 30th.
