THERE ARE DEER OUT THERE

Wisconsin’s gun-deer season starts Saturday morning and a local DNR warden thinks it will be a good season.

"I think it's going to be better than last year," predicts Conservation Warden Adam Hanna. "We're supposed to have a nice cool opening morning. The deer tend to move a little bit more when we have nice cool weather."

Last year, hunters had to deal with warm, foggy weather. "The majority of deer shot during the season are shot during the opening weekend," Hanna notes.

Registrations during the archery season were up and, anecdotally, there seem to be more deer roaming around.

"I've been seeing a lot of deer. We've been getting a lot hit on the roads this month," he says, adding that the "rut," or mating season, is underway.

Clark County usually boasts one of the biggest deer harvests in the state and it’s become quite a destination for hunters. Hanna averages around 100 interactions per day with hunters during the hunt. He says most aren't from the area.

"A lot of people have saved up for a long time and purchased hunting property up here, plus we have 133,000 acres of public forest, which is a big draw for people that don't have property to hunt."
