Area military veterans were honored at several ceremonies around the area Thursday.

Schools around the area held services highlighting the sacrifices made by our fighting men and women.

"Many of the people you see in front of you have paid a price that you will never understand, perhaps, as veterans," explained Neillsville Middle/Elementary Principal Tim Rueth to students gathered in the Fieldhouse. "What they've done for us can never truly be measured."

The High School Band played patriotic tunes, and the elementary students serenaded veterans with a special song.

A nice crowd gathered at the state’s largest Veterans’ Memorial for a ceremony that featured a speech by 1st Lt. Jason Tomlinson of Alpha Battery 1-120th FA, 32 Brigade.

He said he was thankful the public’s perception of those serving had improved.

"Ask any soldier, airman or Marine that's been in the airport in uniform in recent years and I'd be willing to bet they've been approached with handshakes and 'thank yous,'" he said.

"While this recognition and support is welcome, none of the soldiers I know signed up for this recognition."

The names of the KIA from Iraq and Afghanistan were also read.
