"SIPHONING" A PROBLEM IN SOME AREAS OF STATE

With the price of gas again on the rise – it jumped 10-cents to $2.84 in here in Neillsville - more and more vehicle owners are trying to protect themselves from gas siphoning.

While the Neillsville police department hasn’t had any reports of siphoning, other cities around the state are getting more and more reports of gas theft from private vehicles.

While we don’t encourage you to try it, siphoning is relatively simple. It just requires some hose, access to someone’s gas tank and good deal of sucking.

Jeremiah Strauss of Scott’s Bumper to Bumper in Downtown Neillsville says they’ve been selling more and more locking gas caps lately. The caps are easy to install, and protect from would-be siphoners.

"You screw it in, turn the lock-cylinder and quarter-turn and pull the key out. It locks it in so you can't screw it back out without unlocking it," Strauss explains.

Typically, the locking caps cost around $10 to $20.
