OFFICIALS HOPE FOR DISASTER DECLARATION

Officials were still assessing all the road washouts and other damage Friday afternoon, but they’d already counted nearly $600,000 of repairs.

"We're thinking that number is going to be multiplying pretty quick on us as we see water recede," says Clark County Emergency Management Director Michelle Hartness.

It would be difficult for local towns to absorb that kind of bill. They’re hoping to win a disaster declaration.

"When we are looking at our small towns needing $78,000 to $80,000 in road repairs...that wasn't in a budget. They need to figure out how they're going to pay that," Hartness notes. "Hopefully we can find some funding and reimbursement to help get that work done."

A good first step was the State of Emergency declared by Governor Jim Doyle on Thursday. 11 individual towns were also declared in a state of emergency. That should increase Clark County’s chances for assistance, Hartness says.
