The La Crosse Sheriff’s Department has released more information about the investigation into the murders of Dennis and Merna Koula.

Authorities arrested the Koulas’ son, 40-year-old Eric, and have accused him of gunning down his parents for the sizable inheritance.

The Sheriff’s Department released more details of their investigation after an open records request made by the La Crosse Tribune. Among the revelations in the recently released documents is the vast wealth Dennis had amassed, which family members speculated may have led one of their children to commit the grisly act.

Dennis had told his brother several years ago that he had about $4-million.

Authorities have said the believe Eric deposited a forged $50,000 check from Dennis’ account the day after the murders. The newly released documents indicate they also believe they found the checkbook that produced the forged check in Eric Koula's home when he was arrested July 29.

Authorities also found two envelopes, one containing a will, the another a suicide note, in Eric Koula's home. They also seized home tax statements, Social Security documents, coin collections and cash and personal checks from funeral memorials.

Koula has filed a motion requesting the case be thrown out for lack of evidence. A scheduling hearing is set for early November.
