BIG TRAVEL WEEKEND EXPECTED

From WRN's Andrew Beckett:

It’s likely going to be a busy weekend on Wisconsin roads. The number of people expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the Labor Day weekend is expected to be up about 10-percent this year, according to Beth Mosher with AAA-Wisconsin.

About 735,000 people across the Badger State will be out on the roads or in the airports this weekend, with an average trip distance of about 600 miles. Nationally, about 34.4 million Americans are expected to leave home this weekend.

While travel is up, Mosher says it follows a pretty dismal year in 2009 for Labor Day travel. Last year was one of the lowest on record for people making that last trip of the summer tourism season.

Mosher says road construction should not be a major issue for most travelers, and stable gas prices should limit the cost of a trip. The state DOT has suspended road construction projects through Tuesday morning. The statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is about $2.70 right now. Still, gas prices are up about 33-cents over where they were at this point last year.
