LOYAL CORNY AND LOVING IT

The sun is setting earlier these days. The school bells will be ringing next week, but summer has a few more gasps.

For 52 years, Loyal’s Corn Festival has marked the end of summer. It’s on again this week.

"It started out as the end of the harvest time and it's just carried on down through the years," explains Loyal Mayor Carol Lampsa.

The week got underway last night with the selection of new royalty. There will be an ecumenical church service tonight (Thursday) at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and there are plenty of events Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

But then there’s the element that sets the Corn Fest apart. You can purchase a button for $2 and eat all the sweet corn you care to eat on Saturday and Sunday from noon to six.

"Years ago we used to have corn donated, now we purchase it. We get about six tons of corn every year," Lampsa reports.

And if that isn’t corny enough for you, organizers have some new events planned this year. The Corn Lob is a corn-throwing contest that will take place at the Fire Hall from 2-4 on Saturday. The Corn Triathlon will be at 3 p.m. the same day.

"You eat some corn, you chuck some corn and throw it into a bean-bag toss kind of thing," she says.
