A Native American tribe is almost ready to start their own police force. The Ho-Chunk Nation’s law enforcement agency will have jurisdiction over all of its lands.

The Nation is expected to hire their first officer by mid-August.

Ho-Chunk Nation already has cooperative agreements with six counties - Jackson, Juneau, Wood, Monroe, Shawano and Sauk, which allow sheriff's departments to provide law enforcement on Ho-Chunk lands.

The agency will likely develop mutual response agreements with other county sheriff’s departments.
