MEIER SEEKS ATTORNEY FOR APPEAL

The man convicted of landing a fatal blow during a bar fight in Neillsville is seeking a court appointed attorney to navigate his appeal.

Tyler Meier is serving a five-year prison sentence after pleading ‘no contest’ to a charge of felony-murder battery.

Court records indicate he punched Keith Young at the Brickyard Bar and Restaurant in downtown Neillsville. Young fell, hitting his head. He passed away three days later.

At his sentencing, Meier said he pleaded no contest because it was the right thing to do, but became agitated after he received his sentence.

In a letter dated July 20th, Meier requests Judge James Mason schedule a hearing to appoint an attorney at the state’s expense. He says he is pursuing the appeal because of “left out facts, medical support and procedural discrepancies.”

He also hints at his defense, should the case be reopened, stating he perceived a threat that fateful night, and that triggered the “fight or flight instinct that is in every one of us.”

No future court dates have been set. Meier is residing at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution in Plymouth.
