COMMISSION WANTS CITY TO EASE FIREFIGHTER REQUIREMENTS

If the Neillsville Common Council approves a Police and Fire Commission recommendation next week, firefighters would no longer have to live in the city limits.

In fact, the commission went even farther than expected, recommending firefighters should only have to live in the expansive fire district, which includes the city of Neillsville and the towns of Pine Valley, Weston, Seif, Hewett, Levis and part of Grant.

Back in 1991, the Common Council approved a motion requiring that all volunteer firefighters “either reside or work within the city limits”.

Now, the department is having difficulty recruiting enough personnel.

Fire Chief Matt Meyer says they currently have 26 members, and could be losing two more. 29 is full strength.

The common Council will take up the recommendation at their meeting on Tuesday night.
