NEILLSVILLE MAY DROP RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT FOR FIREFIGHTERS
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 -- 12:01 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The Neillsville Police and Fire Commission is meeting tonight, and they may make a recommendation to drop the residency requirement for a volunteer firefighters.

Back in 1991, the Common Council approved a motion requiring that all volunteer firefighters “either reside or work within the city limits”.

Now, the department is having difficulty recruiting enough personnel.

Fire Chief Matt Meyer says they currently have 26 members, and could be losing two more. 29 is full strength.

An item on tonight’s agenda calls for discussion and action to possibly rescind that requirement. The commission could make a recommendation to the full City Council, which is set to meet next Tuesday night.

Meyer would like to see the current wording rescinded or changed to include a 5-mile radius of town.

Tonight’s meeting is at 7 p.m.
