A 33-year-old Marshfield man is dead after crashing his motorcycle during a police chase.

Authorities say Jessie Schmidt was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital after colliding with a van at around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday just outside of Wisconsin Rapids.

The accident happened after officers responded to several complaints of a pair of motorcycle riders driving recklessly. Schmidt fled at a high rate of speed and was perused momentarily, but the chase was discontinued due to heavy traffic.

Officers later found Schmidt had collided with a van.
