AREA SCHOOL SAYS THEY SHOULDN'T BE ON PROGRESS LIST

A clerical error led to an area school being placed on a dubious list.

The Department of Public Instruction’s annual review of school progress, required by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law, found 145 schools and four districts that missed one or more adequate yearly progress (AYP) targets.

The report says Owen-Withee High School did not meet the enrollment or graduation requirements for the 2009-10 school year. They did meet test participation, reading and math benchmarks. But, superintendent Bob Houts says the state got it wrong. Somehow, their graduation rate was misreported and the state added non-graduate numbers from two years together. They’re appealing the data, and expect to be removed from the list.

All tolled, 89 schools and two districts were identified for improvement. Schools and districts have until June 25 to submit appeals for reconsideration of their preliminary progress reports.
