CLARK CO. BUDGET DEALT A BIG BLOW

Bad budget news for Clark County.

Jim Backus of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department told the Finance Committee Wednesday morning Portage County is pulling their inmates from the Clark County Jail at the end of the year.

The Clark County Jail has 126 beds. There are 78 inmates housed there on an average day, around 20 of who come from out of county—mostly from Portage County.

In 2009, Clark County budgeted to receive around $425,000 in revenue from Portage County, who pays Clark County between $40 and $45 per day, per inmate. Portage County has now signed a contract with Lincoln County, where they will pay only around $32 per day.

Backus told the committee it seemed unlikely the department would be able to reduce staff at the jail, despite the projections of fewer inmates.
