CAFTA PASSES HOUSE
Thursday, July 28th, 2005 -- 9:21 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

In a move being criticized by some large farmers' groups, the U.S. House of Representatives held a marathon session, eventually passing the Central American Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA, early this morning. The legislation was pushed by Bush administration. The vote was 217-215 with 25 Republicans defying their leadership and voting against CAFTA. The agreement, which passed the Senate in June, will eliminate trade barriers between the United States and five Central American countries. The Wisconsin Farmers’ Union, and other major ag groups, has blasted the agreement saying it signals a “race to the bottom” for producer prices.
