At this point, it looks like state Sen. Julie Lassa will have a clear path to run for retiring congressman Dave Obey’s 7th district seat.

On Monday, the Democrat from Stevens Point said she was running in the Democratic primary. So far, three prominent Democrats rumored to be mulling a run have removed their names from consideration in support of Lassa’s candidacy.

State Sen. Pat Kreitlow said in a statement that he "wholeheartedly" endorsed Lassa. Sen. Russ Decker also expressed support. Rep. Donna Seidel (D-Wausau) told her hometown newspaper Monday that she also would support Lassa.

Former state senator and Tourism secretary Kevin Shibilski has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.

Who ever gets the nod for the Dems will likely face Ashland County District Attorney Sean Duffy.
