Forecasters say northern Wisconsin could see up to 3-4 inches of new snow tonight.

We’re not expecting much more than a dusting here, but there’s a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of north central and northeastern Wisconsin.

Snow this late in the spring isn’t unprecedented, but it’s pretty rare. And it seems even stranger because we’ve a mild spring—in fact, we haven’t had snow since February.

"We've had some heavier snows where there's been six or eight inches of snow in May," says Tim Halbach, a lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in La Crosse. "It is kind of odd that, of the entire spring season, we're seeing our best chances for snow toward the end of it."

"It depends on different weather systems we have at the time. There's no real trend to what happens in the last two months and what happens in the next month after that. Pretty much anything can happen," he says.

Halbach says the rain should switch over to snow late this evening. Snow should fall until the early morning hours, but not much—if any—will stick to the ground around here.
