An area school district may have to layoff up to six teachers to balance their budget.

According to the Marshfield NewsHerald, the Marshfield School Board voted last night to possibly lay off up to six members of the district's professional staff to fix a $1.4-million budget shortfall.

These would be the first layoffs for the district since 1983, and come just a couple years after district voters passed a five-year, $13.5-million override referendum.

School officials say 15 staff members plan to retire at the end of the year, not enough to cover the budget gap through attrition.
