MIXED BAG FOR SCHOOL REFERENDUMS
Thursday, April 8th, 2010 -- 12:19 pm Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
A note to schools that may need to pass a referendum to stay open: you might want to avoid never-ending revenue cap exemptions.
While results for school referendum around the state Tuesday were mixed, there was one constant: every referendum that didn’t include an end date failed.
Fourteen of 22 debt-related referendum questions passed, compared to 10 of 20 questions that asked for temporary increases in school revenue limits. None of the six requests for recurring revenue-cap increases, which would have allowed districts to raise revenue above state-imposed revenue caps for as long as they wanted, were passed by voters.
Twenty school districts had successful referendums, while 17 school districts saw their referendum measures fail.
