RAW MILK BILL UP FOR A VOTE
Monday, March 29th, 2010 -- 9:00 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

A bill legalizing the direct sale of raw milk to consumers will go before an Assembly committee Tuesday.

The Rural Economic Development Committee will take up the measure, which has already passed through the Senate.

The Senate version is a bit scaled down: it would allow limited raw milk sales directly from a farmer to a customer through 2011.

The Assembly bill doesn't have an end date, but leaders expect it will be amended to match the Senate version.

Since 1957, pasteurization has been required for all milk sold in Wisconsin.

A growing number of people feel the process kills bacteria important for human digestion.
