AMISH EXEMPT FROM HEALTH CARE BILL?
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 -- 12:19 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

As Congressional Democrats and the Obama Administration try to hammer out a health care reform package, it looks like a big portion of our area population might be able to opt out.

According to an upstate New York newspaper article, Amish families, as well as some other religious sects, are covered by a "religious conscience" exemption, which allows people with religious objections to insurance to opt out of the mandate. It is in both the House and Senate versions of the bill, making its appearance in the final version routine unless there are last-minute objections.

There are many sects in the Amish faith, but most do not accept government assistance.
