Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 -- 2:35 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Public hearings were scheduled for Thursday on a bill that would name Lactococcus lactis the state's official microbe.

It's the microbe that converts milk into cheese.

Gary Hebl (Democrat-Sun Prairie) is pushing the measure. He says it would honor not only Wisconsin's cheese-making history but also increase publicity about how important microbes and the state's biotech industry is.
