WIAA OPPOSES OPEN MEETINGS BILL
Monday, November 23rd, 2009 -- 7:22 am
Posted by Larry Hoeser, Sports Director

The WIAA wants to defeat a bill in the state Assembly to make it subject to the same transparency as local governments. Rep. Tony Staskunas introduced the bill. The Democrat from West Allis says it's wrong for the WIAA to take money from public member schools and then make private decisions. WIAA president Dave Anderson says 90 percent of its operating budget comes from tournament ticket sales and most money collected from schools is returned to them. He says the organization addresses many
sensitive issues in the 700 student waiver requests it deals with yearly and helps schools process code of conduct violations. It also makes its annual board of directors' meetings open to the public.
